Letters: Revise Second Amendment

What’s the matter with the NRA and the GOP? AR-15s and AK-47s are not what the Second Amendment is about, or why it was written. It was adopted back when you had to jam powder and a ball down a long-barreled rifle, aim, and shoot. Not fire off 15 rounds as fast as you can pull a trigger. Or have an automatic conversion kit you purchased on the black market or through a mail order catalog (I have received these catalogs), giving you the ability to fire off 30 rounds into crowds of innocent people by just holding your finger on the trigger.

Back in the 18th century when our forefathers drew up these amendments, people lived in small cabins miles from each other or in small communities, and hunting was a way of life and a long gun was as necessary as a horse or a hatchet. A 30/06 bolt-action rifle or pump shot gun are hunting weapons; an AK-47 or AR-15 are military weapons.

We do not have the English army busting into our homes, beating us up, and stealing our food and rifles anymore, so the Second Amendment needs to be revised to eliminate production of these weapons of war, or at least eliminate them from public markets.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
