Letter: Olympic Games keep changing

By Bruce L. Melkonian, Vancouver

The first Olympic Games were held in Greece almost 2,800 years ago. Then men (women could only watch) wrestled, raced each other, and threw things as far as they could.

Things have changed a lot over the years. Now both sexes compete in a host of new events, including beach volleyball, and yes, table tennis. There’s even one in which girls are encouraged to punch each other in the tummy as hard as they can. I can hardly wait for the 2024 Games, in which, at least according to rumor, bowling and maybe even shuffleboard will be added to the agenda.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
