Letter: Protect others with masks, vaccines

By Dan DeWeese, Vancouver

I hear a lot of people saying that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and being forced to wear a mask in public impinges on their freedom. I would like to respond that not getting vaccinated and not wearing a mask impinged on my brother’s freedom.

You see, he was recently admitted to the hospital, where he spent 10 days battling COVID-19. He had been vaccinated early in the year, shortly after the vaccine became available to him. Because he lived with a compromised immune system, he had been exceedingly cautious when going out in public. So, what would he say to those who refuse to be vaccinated and refuse to wear a mask in public? He can’t say. He died in the hospital on July 23 from complications of COVID-19.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
