Letter: Help Afghan refugees adjust

By Eva Luchini, Vancouver
Published: August 31, 2021, 6:00am

Lutheran Community Services Northwest is a nonprofit that resettles refugees, including the Afghani interpreters, translators and engineers that had been working for the United States military.

They face certain torture and death at the hands of the Taliban because they helped the U.S. To leave them behind for that fate violates any notion of fairness and justice. To give them the special immigrant visas they have earned and deserve represents the best of American ideals.

Can you imagine how frightening and difficult it must be for someone fleeing a home consumed by violence? Lutheran Community Services Northwest, with refugee resettlement programs in Vancouver, Tacoma, and Portland, receives refugees directed to the Pacific Northwest for resettlement. We welcome them at the airport, set them up in an apartment with food and necessities, help them learn English, help them navigate the community, get their kids enrolled in school, and much more. Our goal is to help them integrate into their new community and become self-sufficient and contributing residents.
