Letter: Congress: Work to lower drug prices

As I recall from my high school Civics class (yes, they used to teach this stuff!), ours is a representative form or government in the U.S. That is, we elect representatives and senators to represent us (those who voted them into office) when they are considering legislation.

I read in The Columbian that Medicare Part B premiums are going to increase over $21.60 next year to cover the cost of a new Alzheimer’s drug that has a price tag of over $1,000 per week, and like the mask/vaccine mandates, is a positive move for the good of all, even if we don’t personally need it.

But $56,000 per person for a drug? What?

Congress has balked too many times at legislating reduced pricing for drugs, but this is too much. Yes, I know that our members of Congress are outnumbered three to one by Big Pharma’s lobbyists, but where are their guts to actually represent us?

The time has come to tell Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, Mitch McConnell, and other career politicians that they need to either step up or step aside, and, as others have suggested, live by the same rules as those for whom they govern. They are representatives of the people, not members of the Royal Family.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
