Letter: Coach visit seems dishonest

By John J. Monaco, Vancouver
Published: December 9, 2021, 6:00am

Reflecting on this coach’s visit to Vancouver, the way Brian Kelly approached meeting with Tobias Merriweather and his family brings to mind dishonesty (“Burnt ends and blowing smoke,” The Columbian, Dec. 3). I would like to give Mr. Kelly the benefit of the doubt, and probably shouldn’t mention this, however, anyone who follows Division I college football knows it involves a tremendous amount of money. These moves by coaches from one school to another involve a lot of negotiation, however the move by Kelly, I’m guessing, didn’t happen without consideration before he made the trip to Vancouver. He should not have scheduled the visit knowing full well he may leave.
