Thanks to Marcus Lind (“Protect the sanctity of unborn children,” Our Readers’ Views, Dec. 2) for his careful consideration regarding life. Did you know that up to 25 percent of confirmed pregnancies end through spontaneous abortion, more commonly called miscarriage? Most of these happen in the first 13 weeks of the pregnancy while many more happen in the earliest weeks, without the knowledge of the woman, due to abnormalities of the zygote, potential human beings, but not yet fully formed breathing, eating, eliminating, or independent. Do conservatives take God to task for killing those unborn?
What about the other life in this equation, the one that already lives and breathes? The conservative position suggests that the woman’s value resides only in her ability to carry the “unborn” to term. She is a tool to an end, an incubator, and eligible to be guided and governed by the superior male.
The sanctity of life, as defined by many conservatives, does not cover deaths by guns, alcohol, domestic abuse, or the effects of hunger and cold. Women’s physical sovereignty and equality makes the patriarchy tremble in fear. Yes, they should be afraid. Women are the majority of the U.S. population — that’s a lot of votes.
