Sam Evers scored 13 points, including two late free throws as the Washougal boys basketball held off Columbia River 43-42 for their first 2A Greater St. Helens League win.
Adam Reeder had eight of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter for River, which tried to rally from a 33-27 deficit after three quarters.
River got two good shots in the closing seconds to win it, but neither fell. The first was a 3-pointer with about 12 seconds to play.
Washougal rebounded the miss and was fouled. But the Panthers missed the ensuing free throw, and the Rapids got one last look in the lane which hung on the rim for a moment but didn’t fall.
Boys basketball
WOODLAND 70, HOCKINSON 48 — Beau Swett had a team-high 21 points for Woodland (4-1), which was tied with Hockinson at halftime before taking control at home during a 23-point third quarter.
Hockinson’s Colin Wunkoop led the Hawks (1-5) with 15 points and Logan Wall added 14 points.
CASTLE ROCK 54, TENINO 47 — The Rockets got key contributions off the bench late to improve to 6-0 on the season.
After Adam Partridge fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, James Montgomery came in to play solid defense and get some key rebounds.
Chase Rusher hit a clinching 3-pointer late to seal a tight game.
“It was a dogfight tonight,” Castle Rock coach Hayden Tilton said. “No one led by more than three points the whole way until we pulled away late. It was a complete team effort.”
Trystin Marin led the Rockets with 23 points, and Partridge added 18.
LA CENTER 72, MONTESANO 53 — Austin Nixon had 20 points, 11 rebounds and five steals as the Wildcats overcame a slow start to win at Montesano.
Boston Walker added 16 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four blocks for La Center, which trailed 14-9 after one quarter.
But the Wildcats rallied to take a 28-21 lead into halftime, then pulled away in the second half.
Colby Hylton added 15 points for La Center.
Girls basketball
HERITAGE 29, ROCHESTER 23 — Keanna Salavea scored 10 of Heritage’s 13 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Timberwolves gut out a win at the Seaside Holiday Tournament.
Salavea had a game-high 17 points, with Alex Rosenbaum chipping six for Heritage (4-3). Hailey Angwood led Rochester with eight points.
