I was delighted to read the article about the opening of the Safe Shelter Community (“Safe Stay Community for homeless to open Dec. 23 in east Vancouver,” The Columbian, Dec. 21). This is a much-needed first step toward housing those who are living outside. As one who has never had to worry about having a roof over my head, I was humbled and deeply moved by this comment from a person about to move into one of these very modest shelters: “Can you believe this? These are huge!” Perhaps we might all take a lesson in appreciation from this person and ask ourselves what we have been taking for granted.
