Letter: Portland might be dying

I have lived in Clark County for the past 50-plus years. Recently a lifelong friend contacted me about her granddaughter coming to Portland after being accepted into a highly regarded medical program in Portland. My friend wanted to ensure that her granddaughter had someone she could contact if she had problems in Portland i.e. she was afraid for the safety of the granddaughter.

Murder and shootings used to be big news in Portland. Now it barely makes the front page. The Portland Police Bureau had a successful task force for years that worked on shooting cases. It got disbanded. The DA in Portland has quit prosecuting many crimes that adversely affect the quality of life. The mayor of Portland now has to pepper-spray folks who accost him in public. Last night, I watched a KOMO News show on YouTube. It was entitled “Seattle is Dying.” I will say the same about Portland. Just go take a look at it. Be careful, this may be coming to a city near you.
