An early morning fire damaged an apartment in Vancouver and prompted a warning from fire officials of the dangers of attempting to fight a fire yourself.

The fire was reported about 6 a.m. Friday in a third-story apartment in the Ashley Terrace Apartments, 4500 Nicholson Road, according to a statement from the Vancouver Fire Department. Crews arrived to find light smoke coming from the apartment.

Crews were also told that a man was still in the apartment. They found the man on the stairs outside the unit, his face stained with smoke. He told them he had tried to put out the fire using three fire extinguishers but was unsuccessful, the statement said.

“The Vancouver Fire Department wants to remind citizens that breathing in smoke is extremely dangerous to your health and they should get out and stay out of the building,” the statement said.

The man was checked by emergency medical personnel but declined transport to a hospital as crews quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to other units, the statement said.

No other injuries were reported, according to the statement. The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
