A $600,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will help Vancouver update its existing brownfields site inventory.

In partnership with Clark County Public Health and the Vancouver Housing Authority, the grant will be used to expand the existing inventory of potentially hazardous sites, conduct environmental assessments and develop cleanup plans.

A brownfield is a site where the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance or contaminant makes redevelopment difficult. According to a media release from the city of Vancouver, cleaning up these types of properties facilitates job growth, improves and protects the environment, reduces contamination, and supports communities with existing infrastructure.

The grant will primarily focus on properties in the Fourth Plain corridor between Interstates 5 and 205 in central Vancouver, though other sites will also be included.
