After days of uncertainty, forecasters have gone all-in on their forecast for winter weather later this week with predictions of up to 6 inches of snow and possible freezing rain.

The National Weather Service office in Portland has issued a winter storm watch from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning, predicting heavy snow with possible accumulations of 1 to 6 inches and occasional light freezing rain or sleet west and south of the metro area.

“Plan on snow-covered roads,” the storm watch said.

The storm watch also predicts winds gusting as high as 45 mph, with the strongest winds east of Interstate 205 toward the Columbia River Gorge.

Precipitation is expected to decrease later Thursday night but cold temperatures in the 20s and east winds will create low wind chills across the region.

Rain is expected before 10 a.m. Thursday, turning to a mix of rain and snow until 1 p.m. and then all snow after 1 p.m. as the snow level drops from 2,000 feet to 200 feet.

Snow showers are predicted for Friday, with snow likely Saturday, turning back to snow showers on Sunday before turning to rain Sunday night.
