Even with remote learning, snow days possible in some Clark County school districts

With snow projected to hit Clark County, do snow days still exist in the era of remote learning in schools?

The answer depends on the district.

Evergreen Public Schools, the region’s largest district, plans to revert to remote learning for students who are in-building during hybrid learning should inclement weather turn what traditionally would be a day off school in pre-pandemic times, district spokeswoman Gail Spolar said. The district recently completed its phase-in hybrid learning plans for all elementary students, where students attend class in-person twice a week while staying remote the remaining three days.

This week, middle school staffers in the Evergreen district also began three-day hybrid learning training sessions and if weather forces school buildings to close, training would be moved online, Spolar added.

“We don’t want to push back the start of middle school students coming in,” Spolar said. Evergreen welcomes middle school students as soon as Feb. 18 for orientation.

In Vancouver, the district has four snow days built into this 2020-21 calendar, and will observe the first two when necessary, district spokeswoman Pat Nuzzo said, before going to full remote by the third snow day.

Camas built in three days for inclement weather, including one already scheduled for Friday. Others are scheduled for March and May before full remote takes over, Superintendent Dr. Jeff Snell said.

“It might actually work out if the snow comes Friday,” Snell said.
