Letter: Keep kids home for safety

It is too early to send kids back to school. Yes, teachers are near the top of this list for vaccines but why can’t we wait until they’ve actually been administered? Children are in significantly less danger from COVID-19 but the teachers and their families aren’t. Even hybrid is too much, as kids can still carry and transfer the virus. My kids come home from school full of stories of kids spitting on each other, pulling their masks down, and not following distancing rules.

Yes, kids need to get back to school, but why now? It seems unnecessarily dangerous and looks like raw disregard for the safety of the people. With the Vancouver Public Schools budget update it looks like the decision to endanger families has more to do with a lack of funds from issues like enrollment of students than a concern for the education of the kids. We should be keeping the kids home, fixing our school funding, and waiting for the vaccine to run its course in the population.
