Letter: Apply labels equally

By Ed Nelson, Vancouver
Published: February 15, 2021, 6:00am

Regarding the sub-headline: “Deputies recount traffic stop, struggle with Black Vancouver man” (“Report details events in Hazel Dell shooting” The Columbian, Feb. 11). Further in the article: “culminated in the shooting of a Black Man.” Further in the article: “Boyle previously fired his weapon in September 2018 at a man.” Why is the suspect in this case referred to as a “Black man” and the other man Deputy Boyle shot is only a “man”? Second example from today’s paper: “2 accused of robbing store owner” (The Columbian, Feb. 11). Neither arrested suspect is identified by race.

If you’re going to identify people in these situations by their race then do it to everyone equally, or it appears you’re telling us our police and deputies only shoot and/or arrest Black people.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
