Letter: Help keep birds safe

By Martha E. Evans, Vancouver

An article published in The Columbian during the coldest week of the year could result in unnecessary suffering or even deaths of birds who would otherwise get a sustaining meal at a feeder (“Experts: Take down bird feeders,” The Columbian, Feb. 11). According to Portland Audubon, the regularly occurring salmonellosis outbreak among finches is waning. Further, all you have to do is clean the touch points of bird feeders every day — we can even use the same alcohol-based wipes that we’re already using during the pandemic — to reduce the chance of transmission.
