Letter: Test police for implicit bias

I’d like to ask local police why Black males keep getting killed by police? What kind of bias and racist tendencies (if any) does the department look for in both their existing and incoming employees? For example, has the department heard of the Harvard Project Implicit Association Test that measures attitudes and beliefs that people may be unwilling or unable to self-report? Does it know this test can be taken by anyone to test bias for a multitude of different races and characteristics and is considered a gold standard in effectiveness? And it’s free and can be taken from any computer.

We are not paying the police department to kill Black men by getting into scuffles with them, thereby escalating situations and overreacting. How many times can you provide these similar excuses for the conduct of your employees? We need your employees to be sensible, to be fair-minded, to have empathy and treat others as they would want to be treated.
