Letter: Encourage transportation justice

By Ted Sarvata, Vancouver

We need bold leadership from Gov. Inslee and our federal, state, and local officials on both climate justice and transportation justice.

Bikes and bike parts should carry the same or lower sales tax as all other goods. Bikes cause essentially zero wear and tear on pavement and serve to reduce congestion for other road users.

Transit should be 100 percent subsidized and not charge fees to riders. Transit takes lots of cars off the road and is a huge net win for society.

Gas taxes should be higher. The more gas people burn, the worse our climate gets.

Hybrid and electric cars should be encouraged. Eliminate the extra registration fee for these vehicles. Some complain that these drivers aren’t paying their fair share for roads. That’s fine. Tax the behavior we don’t want and subsidize the behavior we do. Hybrids already pay gas taxes. The extra fee is a double charge that only serves to discourage cars that burn less gas.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
