Letter: Place blame where it belongs

By Dylan Normington, Vancouver
Published: January 6, 2021, 6:00am

Yet another offensive column in The Columbian from Ann Donnelly, former chair of the Clark County Republican Party. She wrote a column after the CEO of Starbucks decided to close all Starbucks in the USA for training on customer service and racism. The CEO said that two Black men in a Starbucks were unfairly treated and subject to arrest for no valid reason and training was needed. Donnelly blamed those Black men for Starbucks closing, even though the Starbucks CEO made the decision to close.

More recently, Donnelly wrote that Kevin Peterson Jr. deserves some blame for being killed by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

The facts: Kevin allegedly sold prescription medicine. Not a death penalty crime. Kevin ran from deputies. Not a death penalty crime. Kevin allegedly showed a gun to deputies. Not a death penalty crime. Deputies killed Kevin with no trial, jury or verdict. They fired dozens of bullets in darkness in a heavily populated area. That is much more dangerous than selling drugs.

Donnelly, like many Republicans, blames the Black male victim for decisions made by white men. The CEO closed the company; the deputies pulled the triggers.
