Letter: Racism shown in protest response

Institutional racism was evidenced on Jan. 6 when Homeland Security and the Capitol Police pooh-poohed concerns regarding the protests planned at the Capitol Mall.

The Save America Rally was intended to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to decertify the results of the presidential election during a joint session of Congress. This despite advanced knowledge that large numbers of conspiracy theorists, right-wing militias and members of extremists groups, such as the Proud Boys, would be attending. The D.C. National Guard was nowhere to be seen — nor even ready for deployment. Contrast this with the 1,600 heavily armed National Guardsmen in place during Black Lives Matter protests last June.
