Letter: Herrera Beutler on right side

By David C. Schroeder, Vancouver

A thousand thanks, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, for your vote to impeach President Trump. Not only did you follow your conscience, you spoke with great eloquence. Echoing Jesus’ own words in John’s Gospel, you said, “I’m choosing truth. It’s the only way to defeat fear.”

I did not vote for you in the past. Now, however, I will be taking a second look at supporting you. Also, I want to assure you that I will pray for both you and your family for protection from “patriots” who may wish to do you harm. I pray that none of you 10 brave Republicans, or any politician in our beloved nation, for that matter, will be injured or killed. If so, the perpetrators will have unquestionably confirmed Eugene Robinson’s observation: “Today’s GOP is not a party at all; it is a (personality) cult whose belief system is based on lies” (The Columbian, Jan. 14).

How incredibly sad that the party of Lincoln has lost its moral compass and pledged its blind, sycophantic allegiance, not to the U.S. Constitution, but to a sociopathic white supremacist with blood on his hands.

I cannot agree more strongly with The Columbian’s editorial, “In Our View: Herrera Beutler stands on the right side of history.”
