Letter: Ban bikes from Heritage Trail

By Thomas Petruska, Vancouver

The letter “Keep bikes off hiking trails” (Our Readers’ Views, Jan. 21) certainly hit home for me. On May 10, I was walking on the Lacamas Heritage Trail when a bicycle sideswiped me from behind, knocking me off the trail into the rocks and blackberry bushes.

Luckily, two people were nearby to help me get back on my feet. I suffered a black eye as well as numerous cuts and bruises. However, I was able to get back to my car. I reported this incident by email to the city of Camas, but never received any response.

This particular trail is just not suited for use by bicyclists and pedestrians. The trail system in the Round Lake area is much wider and does not have the many blind curves the Heritage Trail features. I am certain that the majority of walkers and runners would be in favor of banning bikes from the Heritage Trail. Hopefully, Camas city officials will read this letter and take appropriate action.
