The Schmidt family of Clark County has another budding track star.

Steven Schmidt, the youngest of six children, placed fourth in the high jump at the Nike High School Nationals last weekend in Eugene, Ore.

Schmidt cleared 6 feet, 10.25 inches and earned All-American honors.

The youngest Schmidt, who is homeschooled, follows in the steps of his sister Valerie and brother Michael, who both excelled in hurdles and jumping events at Prairie High. His father, Frank Schmidt, also coached at Prairie.

Valerie Schmidt, a sophomore, set a Corban University record in the heptathlon and won the Cascade Collegiate Conference championship in that event. She was set to compete in the NAIA Track and Field Championships this year but had to withdraw with an injury.
