Drivers heading through the Columbia River Gorge on state Highway 14 should expect to encounter delays near Bingen, according to a press release from the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Beginning July 13, contractors will embark on a $1.6 million project to stabilize the slope to the north of a portion of the highway about two miles east of Bingen, in order to reduce the risk of future rockfall incidents. The project is scheduled to wrap up in the fall.

Travelers in both directions should expect daytime single- or double-lane closures, including 45-minute full roadway closures in August. The closures will begin at the start of each hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with 15-minute breaks at the end of each hour to allow traffic to clear.
