Letter: Now is time for arts center

As noted in “In Our View: Vancouver’s moment is now; let’s not waste it” (The Columbian, July 7), this is our time: imagine if along with the development of the waterfront and downtown, Vancouver was to build a fabulous arts center. That was the dream of state Rep. Val Ogden and her husband Daniel in the early years of this century. Unfortunately, the onset of the Great Recession put a damper on that proposed development (along with a new Interstate 5 Bridge). Like Seattle and Portland, Vancouver has a first-rate symphony led by an internationally renowned maestro and composer, Salvador Brotons. Our orchestra deserves a world-class home. But a new arts center will enhance this community in so many ways: it will attract world-class musicians, singers and dancers and provide numerous educational opportunities for our youth. Community leaders are already hard at work to get this project done; with the support of Vancouverites, the moment is now!
