WASHOUGAL — Students at Columbia River Gorge Elementary School raised more than $4,000 for the American Heart Association during The Kids Heart Challenge.

The challenge combined teaching students about their hearts while raising funds for programs. Students who registered online took on challenges like a pledge to be kind or to move more. They raised money online by asking friends or family.

For every $1,000 raised, a staff member volunteered to get pied in the face. First-grader Jase Kenyon was randomly drawn to pie Principal Tracey MacLachlan.

“The students are extremely excited about the opportunity to pie Principal MacLachlan and are proud of their efforts to do good in the world and help others that are less fortunate,” said physical education teacher Jessica Warta, who organized the fundraiser.
