Letter: More officers are needed

I learned a very disturbing statistic that pertains to the number of police per 1,000 citizens in this state. Of all 50 states in the union, we have the least number of officers to uphold the law and protect our citizens. The excuse that there is no money in the budget doesn’t hold water.

Officers with radar could be stationed on Padden Parkway, Ward Road, N.E. 162nd Avenue, Fourth Plain Boulevard, Highway 14, I-205 and I-5. These thoroughfares are representative of the Indianapolis 500 or Daytona speedway. These officers could write enough tickets to supply Clark County police and sheriff’s departments with sufficient personnel to take care of 90 percent of the infractions committed every day and to purchase additional equipment like motorcycles, vehicles, uniforms, etc.

In one of the wealthiest states, 1.19 officers per 1,000 citizens is not representative of what we deserve as taxpayers.

Our neighboring state, Oregon, uses a more efficient and less costly method of capturing the speed demons: cameras.

The absence of officers in these areas is quite apparent to all the drivers who use these roads. Maybe it’s time to make a change and put an end to this flagrant law-breaking.
