Letter: Republicans only help themselves

By Roy Wilson, Vancouver

Republicans launched 33 separate hearings on Benghazi, declaring “Americans deserve to know the truth!” Conversely, Republicans blocked one single investigation into the Jan. 6 attempt to overthrow our government, because the truth would hurt them politically.

Republicans filed over 50 lawsuits trying to reverse the 2020 election results. Those court cases shown to be without merit, Republican state leaders now push laws to severely restrict voting in ways specifically designed to slant elections in their favor.

Republicans still promote Trump’s “Big Lie” and other falsehoods, such as saying the insurrectionists were “antifa” or just “tourists,” though videos clearly show Trump’s supporters beating police, building a gallows, shouting “Hang Mike Pence,” ransacking offices, etc. When, as a “tourist,” have you destroyed someone’s office, called for someone to be hanged or violently attacked a policeman?

Recall too:

  • Republicans attempted over 50 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, never once having offered a replacement plan.
  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has openly said his only agenda is to obstruct anything from President Joe Biden.

One must wonder: Do today’s Republicans do anything at all for the American people? Or is their sole motivation to cynically help themselves, hurt Democrats, and gain power and control by any means possible?

The answer is painfully obvious.
