Letter: Country must pay as it goes

My favorite part of the paper is the Opinion page. The right-leaning Lisa Benson political cartoon on June 17, poking fun at Democrats, showed a flag that said, “TAX & SPEND” as if it was a bad thing. I think having money for big-budget stuff is a great thing. I certainly save for big projects; I don’t just spend and go into debt.

The Republican financial philosophy is “cut taxes and spend,” which has pushed the U.S. into double-digit trillions in debt which, of course, they blame on the Democrats. The GOP has this idea that if they starve the government to keep it small, it will be better. That hasn’t worked so far. Starving the government has meant cutting to the quick programs that have supported American citizens and led to the huge gap between rich and poor, in understanding, compassion, and justice in the way the various ethnicities in this country are treated. It’s time to try something different, something called pay as you go, the same way that families budget, but for the country.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
