Hydrangea giveaway at Columbia Springs

If you love the lush spectrum of purples, pinks and blues that hydrangea blooms bring to a summer garden, now is the time to get hydrangea plants in the ground. A nursery-grown hydrangea can be a bit pricey but, thanks to a generous donation from Lori and Michael Gordon, local gardeners are in for a spring treat: Free hydrangea cuttings are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Columbia Springs, 12208 S.E. Evergreen Highway, Vancouver.

The cuttings are small and might not bloom for two to three years, according to Kylie Sahota, Columbia Springs communications coordinator. Plant them right away in a partially shady spot, she suggested, and make sure they get lots of water.

Columbia Springs staff decided that, due to the recent drop in COVID-19 cases, an outdoor pickup would be safe. Those who come to collect their free cuttings must still wear masks at all times and maintain 6 feet from other people.

For more information, contact Sahota at 360-882-0936, ext. 230, or kylie@columbiasprings.org.
