Letter: Support passage of climate initiative

By Emily C. Martin, Seattle
Published: March 14, 2021, 6:00am

Our network of statewide youth-led organizations including Our Climate and Sunrise Tacoma urge our state Legislature to pass HB 1204, or Clean Cars 2030.

As our elected representatives, it is their responsibility to protect our right to a livable future by passing bold, equitable and science-based climate policies this legislative session. The best time to pass HB 1204 would have been decades ago, but the next best option is to pass it now.

Young Washingtonians know that our future (and the futures of generations to come) depends on drastically reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Passing HB 1204 is a critical step in reaching that target. There is no way that we can reach our climate targets without rapidly transitioning away from gasoline.

HB 1204 is good for our environment, our health, our economy and our communities. Young Washingtonians know that we can set an example for the rest of the country to follow by passing this legislation. You can be on the right side of history by calling your legislators and asking them to support the passage of HB 1204 today.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
