Letter: Join hands with Democrats

The source may be gone, but the toxicity of Trumpism still fouls the air of Washington. Hundreds of Republicans are parroting without a shred of proof the big lie that the election was stolen. Good Republican citizens are finding themselves represented by the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan, Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz. Republicans have generated more than 250 pieces of legislation that seek to disenfranchise Democrats in general and minorities in particular. Their increasing embrace of lies, racism and fealty to Trump is truly horrifying. Since the Jan. 6 insurrection, thousands of right-thinking people have abandoned the Republican Party. It’s a trend that I applaud.

I have been a registered Democrat for 57 years because I perceive it to be the party of the common man. For generations, the Republicans have represented corporations and the super rich. The GOP’s singular talent has been to repeatedly convince its members to vote against their own best interests.

I wholeheartedly invite disenchanted Republicans to join hands with the Democrats. Our tent is large and welcoming.
