Letter: Democrats better for economy

By Jody Brittell, Vancouver

Response to Tom Nelson’s letter “Biden has been a tragedy” (Our Readers’ Views, May 10), Nelson stated that President Obama didn’t do much for Americans.

Actually, President Obama accomplished a lot for the American people: he signed the Affordable Care Act providing health care to over 20 million Americans, rescued the country from recession, cutting the unemployment rate from 10 to 4.7 percent, saved the auto industry, reduced homeless veterans by 50 percent …

These are just a few of many positive examples from the Obama administration. If you look at the Obama administration’s 2.3 percent average GDP growth (during a recession), and Trump administration’s economic 2.5 percent GDP growth (2016-18) continued a positive trend until COVID-19 occurred. Under Biden those same economic metrics will continue to improve and remain positive.

If the Trump economy was great, why did the national debt increase by almost a trillion dollars a year? That was before COVID-19. If Trump was a good leader he would have listened to the pandemic experts in setting clear precise policies in response to COVID-19 and the U.S. economy would have recovered sooner.

Looking at the past economies it seems the Democrats have always cleaned up after a GOP administration. This trend will continue under Biden. This response is from a reformed Republican who used to listen to Fox and right-leaning radio personalities.
