Ava Smith might be a freshman, but that doesn’t stop her from putting up big numbers.
Smith scored 26 points, leading Camas to a 53-50 win over Union on Tuesday in a clash of the 4A/3A Greater St. Helens League’s top two teams. Camas sits atop the league at 8-0 while Union is 7-2.
Smith was eight for 10 from 3-point range. She accounted for all but one of Camas’ 19 points in the second and third quarter.
Fellow freshman Reagan Jamison didn’t score until the fourth quarter, but came up clutch. She hit a 3-pointer to put Camas ahead with under 2:00 to play, then helped seal the win with a floater in the lane.
Lolo Weatherspoon scored 22 points to lead Union.
Both teams started off fast, with Camas ahead 25-19 after the first quarter. From there it settled into a close defensive battle with neither team opening a substantial lead.
