Letter: Cyclists need to be cautious

By Tony Sassone, Vancouver

Are you kidding me? I just read that article on biking the roads in Vancouver and a car’s obligation to give 3 feet of space (“Make room for bicycles,” The Columbian, May 18). My question is, why would anyone ever consider biking on roads without an adequate shoulder? I have biked on trips through two states and I would never consider a route without at least a 3-foot shoulder.

Did you see those photos from the biker’s GoPro camera? Traffic flying past you and you and your bike are right on the road, with your back to traffic. Unless I can grow some eyes in the back of my head someday, I think I will stick to a 3- to 6-foot shoulder. Bikers really should think twice. You may be right that cars should give you at least 3 feet of space, but what good is it being right when you’re dead right?
