Letter: Which is it, Jaime?

The Republican Party should no longer be taken seriously. Liz Cheney was removed from her leadership position for no other reason than she disagreed with the “Big Lie” touted by the former president. She was accused only of not pledging undying allegiance to Trump, who himself is being investigated for multiple crimes.

It seems that a majority in the Republican Party believe that any Democratic victories must be illegitimate. They believe Trump’s “Big Lie” that he actually won the election. Many states with Republican majorities are proposing and/or passing laws that disenfranchise and suppress voting in ways that will affect largely Democratic districts. They are making it harder to vote by mail (which we know works in Washington), closing or reducing hours at polling sites, and reducing the number of ballot drop boxes.

Our local Republican, Jaime Herrera Beutler, to her credit, did not vote to oust Liz Cheney. However, she did vote against H.R. 1, the “For the People Act of 2021,” which would expand access to the ballot, limit the influence of big money in politics, and enhance anti-corruption measures. Which is it, Jaime? You can’t vote for a representative for speaking the truth, then vote against guaranteeing citizens’ access to express their own truth.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
