Letter: Vancouver needs an arts center ASAP

Seven years ago, I moved to Vancouver and discovered the amazing Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Having heard professional orchestras in Los Angeles, New York and Boston, I was amazed at the professional and talented orchestra here.

Our world-class conductor and composer, Salvador Brotons, who lives in Barcelona, Spain, built this orchestra over the past 30 years into one of the best I have ever heard. What I couldn’t understand was why it was performing at Skyview High School, which is not available at this time, so our first live performances have been held in Portland’s Newmark Theater and the second at the ilani casino near La Center.

Vancouver needs a performing arts center, and we need it now — not only for the VSO to perform in, but to bring world-known artists here to Vancouver so we don’t need to go to Portland.

I have been involved with the VSO since moving here and presently serve as the chair of The Friends of the VSO. It is an honor to do so and to support this important Center for the Arts project: www.centerforartswwa.org.
