Letter: Respect the right to refuse vaccine

By Bob Staples, VANCOUVER

While Washington State University football coach Nick Rolovich is the most visible state employee whose job was compromised by vaccine mandates, he’s not alone. What’s happening to those refusing forceful vaccinations is a travesty.

I am not anti-vax. My house and I are vaccinated, though it was agonized over due to testing with aborted fetus cell lines — or does “My body, my choice” only apply to those favoring abortion?

The historical strength of this country has been tolerance of dissenting viewpoints, wartime conscientious objectors, religious exemptions for other policies, etc. Now sincerely held religious objections are steamrolled in favor of politically correct, one-size-fits-all group-think. This is immoral and scary.

Our government was founded on freedom of choice and its role was to protect individual rights, now turned on its head with total lack of tolerance for dissent by imposing the opinions of those in power, regardless. Be careful of such precedents. That pendulum swings both ways.

While not original to him, the late liberal U.S. Sen. Daniel Moynihan articulated that diversity well: “I may disagree with what you say, but will fight to the death for your right to say it.” Let’s prayerfully step back and restore that balance.
