Letter: Plenty to be thankful for

By Den Mark Wichar, Vancouver

I’m thankful: for people who use refillable bottles; who coast to red lights; who dry their hands using evaporation; who pass on single-use plastic straws and spoons; who buy things made without child or sweatshop labor; who support local businesses.

I’m thankful: for people who question their sources; who question themselves; who listen to opponents; who ignore social media; who are deliberate rather than impulsive; who can change their minds, and sometimes do; who believe in science.

I’m thankful: for people who stand up to bullies and haters; who stand with outsiders; who share; who smile at strangers; who set high standards for themselves, and expect the same from others; who distrust corporate power and mob rule; who love justice.

I’m thankful: for people who are informed citizens; who communicate intelligently with elected officials; who attend protests without weapons; who volunteer for human rights and the environment; who are able to laugh, and to cry. And to dream.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
