Ridgefield football 5-0 after win at Washougal

Spudders have big second half to put away Panthers in 2A GSHL

WASHOUGAL — It’s a simple fact that in football, despite all of the new offensive and defensive formations, plays and schemes, the team who plays with a greater intensity usually wins.

The Ridgefield Spudders turned a close game into a comfortable win, outscoring the Washougal Panthers 25-6 in the second half en route to a 39-13 win in 2A Greater St. Helens League action at Fishback Stadium.

Senior wide receiver/defensive back Ty Snider rushed for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and snared an interception in the win, but he felt the Spudders played with more of an edge in the second half.

“The difference was the intensity we had…we came out kinda flat in the first half and that’s not Ridgefield football,” Snider said. “We went back to what we knew in the second half which was fast and intense football and executing.”

Clinging to a 14-7 lead, the Spudders (5-0 overall) put the ball in the end zone on the first series of the second half.

Washougal answered with a touchdown of its own on a Rankin Reynolds two-yard run to pull to within eight points at 21-13 and recovered a fumble on the ensuing Ridgefield drive. The Panthers had the ball on the Spudder 32 with a chance to tie but penalties stalled the drive. An 18-0 fourth quarter by Ridgefield put the game out of reach.

The Spudders played most of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter without quarterback Brayden Malella. Malella, Clark County’s passing leader with just under 1,000 yards on the season and 14 touchdowns, took a big hit after a nine-yard scramble out of bounds. He was taken to the hospital for x-rays for a possible broken collarbone. In stepped game one starter Logan DeBeaumont who seamlessly guided the offense to three scores. His lone pass was a 32-yard touchdown strike to Snider on a sideline route.

“Logan and Brayden have been rotating and both are very competitive…we’re not going to miss a beat with Logan in. We hope Brayden is going to be okay,” Snider said.

The Spudders (3-0 in league play, 5-0 overall) also used a balanced offense, rushing for 211 yards and passing for 215. Running backs Davis Pankow and Connor Delamarter combined for 166 yards and three touchdowns in addition to Snider’s rushing and receiving touchdowns. Ridgefield plays host to second-place Mark Morris on Thursday night. The Monarchs moved to 3-1 in league play with a 27-21 win over Hudson’s Bay.

Washougal (1-3, 1-4) was led by Holden Bea who threw for 217 yards and rushed for 45 more. Thomas Brown added 103 yards receiving for the Panthers, who take on Hudson’s Bay next week.
