I have read the articles about the new bridge and the most recent vote by the Clark County councilors. The vote to move forward was mixed, and the biggest objection is the continued cry for “no tolls.” It seems the main argument is this would harm Clark County residents who work in Portland and would be paying these tolls.
We now have technology that can place a small decal or device on your windshield that pays in advance for tolls. This is what is being used in the Seattle area to pay for crossing the Highway 520 bridge from Bellevue into Seattle.
Why couldn’t we create a similar device for Clark County commuters? If you registered with the state and showed you are a Clark County resident, this device — paid for with a nominal monthly fee — would bypass the toll charges.
It seems to me the biggest argument that many have is the belief that tolls would put undue burden on Clark County residents.
