Letter: Fond memories of Powell

By Dave Herrera, Vancouver
Published: October 24, 2021, 6:00am

I was superintendent at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site at the time when Gen. Colin Powell’s helicopters landed on the parade grounds. I met him shortly after his landing. He walked up to me and thanked me for allowing his crew to land in the park. He asked if I would be attending the Medal of Honor Ceremony at the nearby Marshall House. I said I wasn’t invited. He said, “You are now.”

That’s the kind of man he was.
