Letter: Finish the Afghan evacuation

By Russell Freeland, Vancouver
Published: September 1, 2021, 6:00am

I believe the United States has a moral as well as a practical imperative to get all Afghans who are at risk because of their help to the U.S. during the war out of the country. The list already exists. The people interviewed on PBS News presented convincing testimony that a five- to six-day extension would do the trick. We still have plenty of muscle to twist the arm of the Taliban.

Extending the deadline is the only appropriate course. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, please exert what pressure you can on the Biden administration.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
