Clark County breakthrough COVID-19 cases rise about 62 percent in two weeksFree

The number of people vaccinated against COVID-19 who tested positive for the disease rose about 62 percent over two weeks, in the latest data from Clark County Public Health.

Public Health reported 638 new breakthrough cases on Friday. Of those, 426 showed symptoms, up about 56 percent from Aug. 19, 10 were hospitalized and four died.

Since February, when vaccines started becoming available, 1,660 breakthrough cases have been reported, with 1,191 showing symptoms, 57 hospitalized and nine fatalities, according to Public Health data.

The number of Clark County residents age 12 and up who were fully vaccinated rose 6,145 over the past two weeks to 249,042, or 58.6 percent of the eligible population.

“As the number of people vaccinated increases, we expect to see the number of breakthrough cases increase,” Public Health said in a statement posted to social media. “In addition, the number of new COVID-19 cases in our community has increased substantially in recent weeks. Two months ago, we had about 20 new cases per day. Now, we have about 225 new cases per day.”
