Letter: Protect kids; get vaccinated

Keep kids in school! This is our third school year impacted by COVID-19. Many high-schoolers have yet to experience a school dance, a field trip or an all-school assembly. With vaccines available for those eligible who are ages 12 and older, combined with solid evidence that supports universal masking to reduce the spread, there is no excuse.

Unfortunately, after I’ve lived in Clark County for nearly 40 years, it has become increasingly apparent that this is no longer a community supporting each other. Remember the epic flood in 1996, when the community banded together to sandbag the waterfront? Or that time in December 2018 when Christmas bikes intended for foster kids were stolen, and the community raised more than ever to give bikes to children in need?

Instead, today we are fighting over simple strategies to keep children safe and in school, claiming “child abuse” and “facial freedom.” Child abuse is not wanting to prevent undue harm and illness for children. Freedom requires responsibility, not selfish acts based on irrational fears of microchips and magnets.

Lines of unmasked parents can be seen outside schools during drop-off. Please, mask up for that 10-minute school drop-off.

We can do better, Clark County. Get vaccinated: Call 833-VAX-HELP.
