A transient man accused in a stabbing Sunday at a downtown Vancouver homeless camp appeared in court via video from a hospital bed Thursday.

Stinlee Dornelus, 26, was scheduled to appear Monday morning in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, but the court learned he was in the hospital. There was no indication as to why he has been in the hospital this week.

By Thursday, the allegation was amended to first-degree assault. Judge Derek Vanderwood set Dornelus’ bail at $500,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 7.

Vancouver police responded at 2:23 a.m. to a homeless camp in the streets west of Share House, 1115 W. 13th St. Officers found Brian Moore, 40, suffering from three stab wounds to his upper body, according to a probable cause affidavit.

He underwent surgery later Sunday and is expected to survive his wounds, Vancouver police Officer Ilia Botvinnik previously told The Columbian.

Moore told police that Dornelus stabbed him, court records state.

Police found Dornelus in a parking lot down the street and said Dornelus had a knife. He allegedly admitted to stabbing Moore once but said that Moore had hit him with a bat, the affidavit says.

Police said they couldn’t find any witnesses to the stabbing. Officers arrested Dornelus because of his inconsistent statements about what happened and Moore’s “life-threatening” stab wounds, the affidavit states.
