Letter: Summon courage, address guns

Two-thirds of Americans support reasonable regulations on the acquisition and operation of firearms, according to May 2022 Ipsos polling data. Most Americans are not opposed to firearms ownership. A rabid minority of gun owners, however, vociferously reject any notion of regulation. Their persistent unfounded claim is that regulation is government overreach and commencement of the confiscation of their guns. If true, there would be no motor vehicles of any kind in America. There are plenty of laws on all forms of motor transportation and certainly we see no confiscatory moves by governments upon motor vehicles.

The majority of law-abiding gun owners must wake up and drown out the blithering minority of their ignorant brethren and support what most Americans are calling for. I read and sense that should the slaughter of innocents continue while nothing substantive is done, calls to repeal the Second Amendment itself may become a matter we might all be openly debating. This could be averted if the majority of Americans, gun owners, and yes, the NRA would summon courage and address the problem. With reasonable regulations everyone’s right to bear arms as well as to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness can be assured.
