Letter: Use the brains God gave us

Last week I read a letter to the editor in The Columbian suggesting God “Created the Earth to produce the amount of fossil fuel that is necessary for man to use until the Earth no longer exists” (“Letter: Fossil fuels for our use?,” Our Readers’ Views, Aug. 7). The letter’s author suggests we humans are helpless creatures living in a world where our future is preordained.

I disagree. Fortunately, God also blessed man with the intelligence to develop other sources of energy that won’t result in the premature destruction of the beautiful planet He created. And He is testing us right now. The Bible contains many verses directing us to cherish this beautiful planet and to take care of it. I much prefer this perspective. So do my children and grandchildren.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
