My husband and I traveled by air much of our professional careers, and continue to travel by air quite a bit during retirement. I have flown over 1 million miles on both Alaska Airlines and United Airlines.
There is now a tradition of allowing active military service members to board planes even in advance of first-class passengers. Additionally, most of us thank these individuals for their service to our country as they board our flights.
I would like to propose to airlines that we start doing the same for our “active-duty teachers.” Teachers have always been our heroes — ensuring that our children receive high-quality education, sometimes in spite of low pay and poor working conditions. Many teachers purchase school supplies for children in need out of their own pockets rather than have them be deprived. These conditions and challenges have only gotten worse in recent years — and many members of the public are now second-guessing the subjects they teach.
We should all be thanking teachers, as well as our military, for their service to our country.
